CONCORDIA SWEEPS CACC MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Brandon Whitaker of Concordia College has claimed Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week accolades for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 6. Fellow Clipper Norman Pope was tabbed Rookie of the Week.

Whitaker, a 6-1 sophomore guard from Harlem, N.Y., led Concordia to a 2-0 week with an average of 21.5 points per-game while shooting a remarkable 75-percent (18-for-24) from the field and 54.5-percent (6-for-11) from beyond the arc. He also added 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per-game. He erupted for 27 points on 12-for-15 shooting and four rebounds against Nyack. He followed with 16 points and three assists in a road win at USciences.

Pope, a 5-11 freshman guard from Washington, D.C., averaged 16.0 points, 5.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per-game in a 2-0 week for the Clippers. He registered 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting, five assists and three steals in a win over USciences.

Honorable Mention

Temi Adebayo, Philadelphia (Jr., C, 7-0, Ibadan, Nigeria) - Led the Rams to a win over Caldwell with 18 points, eight rebounds and six blocks.

Almin Hodzic, Dominican (Sr., C, 6-10, Budd Lake, NJ) - Averaged 12.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 5.5 blocks per-game in a 1-1 week.

Adewale Adefemi, USci (Sr., F, 6-4, Chesilhurst, NJ) - In three games, averaged 18.7 points and 11.7 rebounds while shooting 53% from the field.

Azeez Ellegood, Goldey-Beacom (Sr., G, 5-8, Wilmington, DE) - In a 1-1 week, averaged 16.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals per-game.     

Ahmad Harris, Bloomfield (Jr., G, 5-9, Linden, NJ) - Posted 10.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists per-game in a 1-1 week. 

CACC Notes

Bloomfield - The Deacons picked up a pair of CACC road victories this week, anchored by junior point guard Ahmad Harris.  One of the top defenders in the league, Harris averaged 10.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.5 steals over the two-game stretch. Freshman forward Mike Williams solidified the frontcourt scoring effort, averaging 11.5 points and three rebounds in the victories. Gage Daye totaled a team-high 19 points and five assists in Thursday's win over Dominican, while Harris notched a 12-point, 14-rebound, six-assist and four-steal effort to help top the Chargers.  Senior guard Ryan Rodrigues went 6-11 from beyond the arc in the win over Holy Family, going for a game-high 25 points in the win.  Matt Wafula provided a solid frontcourt compliment to Williams in the win over the Tigers, totaling 13 points and six rebounds in the triumph.

Caldwell - The Cougars dropped a pair of CACC contests last week, falling to Felician on Thursday at home before losing to Philadelphia in overtime on the road. Junior guard Derrick Ross tallied career highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds in the loss at Philadelphia. Seven of his 10 boards came on the offensive glass. Senior forward Antonio Brimley added 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Caldwell plays at Dominican on Wednesday and hosts USciences on Saturday.

Concordia - The Clippers grabbed a pair of wins last week.  The first came over Nyack in a game that included three Clippers hitting double digits; Brandon Whitaker with 27 points, Norman Pope with 19 points and Argelix Gil with 13 points.  Two days later the Clippers earned their second win of the week at USciences.  Norman Pope dropped 23 points, Whitaker added 16 points and Gil posted another double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  The Clippers face off this week against Bloomfield and Wilmington. 

Dominican - Dominican had a six-game winning streak (dating back to 1/11/11) snapped for the second time this season by the Bloomfield College Deacons after suffering a 78-69 setback on 2/3/11. DC rebounded with a road victory over Wilmington University, 55-52 on 2/5/11 to finish the week with a 1-1 record and improve to 13-9 overall and 9-3 in conference play. This week senior center Almin Hodzic tallied his eighth double-double of the season (in the loss to Bloomfield) and tallied 10 blocks to bring his season total up to 68 blocks on the season. Sophomore guard Leon Porter averaged 13.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg and 5.5 assists per game for the week, while rookie Khaleev Ginyard averaged 11.0 ppg while shooting 53.8% from the floor.

Felician - Felician is riding a season-high four-game winning streak. The Golden Falcons erased double-digit deficits in both halves of Saturday's road victory over Chestnut Hill. Junior G Jimmy Schmitt scored a season high 10 points in Thursday's road win over Caldwell.

Goldey-Beacom - With the team's win over Post on Saturday, the Lightning increased their school-record home win-streak at the Jones Center to nine games dating back to a lopsided win over Wilmington on Dec. 7. They are now 10-2 at home this season, and one win shy of tying the 2006-07 team's school record of 11 home wins.

Post -  Post University's Devron Washington tallied a season-high 22 points in the team's 68-60 loss to Goldey-Beacom on the road Saturday afternoon. Post is now third in the CACC North Division standings. The Eagles travel to Nyack Tuesday night to take on the Warriors before hosting the Holy Family Tigers on Saturday February 12. Saturday will also be Post University's Pink Zone event to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Philadelphia - The Rams had only one game week, beating Caldwell College 72-65 in OT. Junior center Temi Adebayo led his squad with 18 points, eight boards and six blocks. Also scoring in double figures were junior forward Corey Francisco (17 points), freshman guard Nick Christian (16 points) and sophomore guard Jim Connolly (15 points). The Rams will host Holy Family University on Tuesday (2/8) in a CACC make-up game at 7:00 p.m. The game was postponed due to weather last week.

USciences - Senior Adewale Adefemi (Chesilhurst, N.J.) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team as a second team selection for District 2 College Division which was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)on Thursday. Adefemi is the first men's basketball player ever named to a CoSIDA Academic All-district Team. Adefemi's 25 points on Saturday moved him from 21st to 18th on the Devils all-time scoring list with 1,315 career points.  He also moved from 8th to 5th on the Devils all-time rebounds chart with ten on Saturday vs. Concordia to give him 791 for his career. In the most recent NCAA Statistical report for Division II (1/30/11), the Devils are ranked 50th in scoring defense, allowing just 65.5 points per game, 30th in field goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to just 40.1% shooting, and 34th in rebound margin, out-rebounding opponents by 5.5/game. Adefemi  ranks 22nd nationally in rebounds per game(9.7). Will Kernan (Medford, N.J.) ranks 83rd in steals per game (1.9) while Myer Messinger (Trucksville, Pa.)  is 97th in rebounding (7.6/game).
