Philadelphia, PA- One man. One
University. Win number 903.
Philadelphia University Head Men's Basketball Coach Herb Magee became the all-time winningest men's hoops coach (in NCAA wins) Tuesday night, passing Bobby Knight as the Rams (23-6, 15-1 CACC) earned a 76-65 victory over Goldey-Beacom College (17-7, 11-4 CACC) at the Gallagher Athletic Center on Herb Magee Court in front of a sell-out crowd. Coach Magee now has 903 career wins, all at Philadelphia University.
The maroon and gray got a big lift from the game's high-scorer, PhilaU senior guard Russell Frederick (Baltimore, MD/ Calvert Hall) who notched 24 points, six boards and four blocks.
PhilaU turned the ball over just three times, a season best.
GBC was led by Samuel McDuffie, who added 22 points and six boards, while PhilaU got a big night from senior forward Malcolm Ingram (Philadelphia, PA/ Solebury Prep) with 12-point and nine-rebounds on the night.
Pumped up, PhilaU charged out to a 14-0 first half lead. Four Ram starters scored in double-digits, including senior guard Marcus Lemon (Alexandria, VA/ T.C. Williams) who laid one in at 13:25 in the first half to give PhilaU a 15 point lead (18-3). Lemon had 13 points on the night.
A trey by Frederick with less than two minutes remaining in
the first stanza gave the Rams their largest lead (17 points) of
the half at 38-21, and the home squad went into the locker room up
40-24.
GBC would get as close as 66-59 in the final period, but Lemon shut the door with his second three of the night and the Ram fans stormed the court to celebrate with Coach Magee at the buzzer.
PhilaU returns to the hardwood on Saturday (2/27) for Senior Day at the Gallagher Athletic Center in a 4 PM contest vs. Nyack College.
