OVERTIME UNKIND TO PHILADELPHIA AND HOLY FAMILY AT NCAA MEN'S REGIONAL

March 15, 2008

WALTHAM, MA - Philadelphia University and Holy Family University, the No. 6 and 7 seeds at the NCAA Northeast Region Men's Basketball Tournament, both suffered overtime losses in Saturday's quarterfinal round at Bentley College. The Rams took No. 3 Saint Rose to four overtimes before falling, 85-75, while the Tigers were upended by No. 2 Assumption College, 74-66, in overtime.

The four-overtime game between Philadelphia and Assumption was historical. It marks just the third time in NCAA Division II Tournament history that a game has gone that far, and is the first since 1983 when Sacred Heart defeated Assumption College, 113-108.

Philadelphia looked to be in control and held a 51-43 advantage with just over five minutes remaining, but the Golden Knights would close regulation with a 9-1 run to send the game to overtime with a 52-52 deadlock. In overtime, Philadelphia senior forward Malcolm Ingram tied the game at 57 with free-throws, and Saint Rose guard Jermaine Clark attempted a potential game-winning 3-point attempt at the buzzer, but it was off the mark.

In the second overtime, the Rams took a 65-61 lead on a pair of Ingram free throws with 2:09 remaining, but Saint Rose junior forward Evan Lane connected on four consecutive free-throws to tie the game and Ingram's jumper as time wound down was long, forcing a third overtime with the score tied 65-65.

A fourth overtime was forced after Ingram converted a lay-up with 40 seconds left to tie the score at 72. The Golden Knights kicked off overtime with a 3-point field goal from Clark at the 3:57 mark. Ben Johnson then connected on one of two free throw attempts with 3:11 to play, extending the lead to 77-73, but Frederick trimmed the lead to two with a layup with 2:47 remaining. However, that would be the final field-goal of the contest for the Rams as Frederick fouled out less than a minute later on a charge and Saint Rose closed the game by making six straight free throw attempts -- all by senior guard Steve Dagostino -- to account for the final score.

In the Holy Family contest, Assumption went on an 8-0 run in overtime en route to the 74-66 triumph. Holy Family was hot at the start and led by 18 points, 32-14, in the first half. However, Assumption stormed back and eventually led by five, 62-57, with 37 seconds remaining in regulation. But, Holy Family senior guard Michael Sturns, the Division II leading scorer at 26.5 points-per-game, stuck a three-pointer with two seconds left to send the game to overtime.

With the score tied at 64 with 4:17 left in the extra session, the Greyhounds rattled off eight unanswered points to go ahead 72-64 with 61 seconds left.

Sturns led the Tigers with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Ryan Lancaster added 22 points.
