CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball program announced its schedule for the 2006-07 season today. The Cougars will open with games against Division I Rutgers University and Seton Hall University before heading to Golden, Colo., for a tournament at Colorado School of Mines.
For the second straight year Caldwell will face the Scarlet Knights on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway, N.J. Then on Saturday, Nov. 11, the Cougars will play Seton Hall at 1:00 p.m. in the Pirates' season opener at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J. This is the first time Caldwell has faced Seton Hall in any sport.
"I'm not sure there are too many Division II teams playing two programs from a major conference such as the Big East, so we certainly have our hands full," said Mark Corino, Caldwell's head coach and Executive Director of Athletics. "But I think our players are excited to play in the bigger arenas, and the games obviously help us from a visibility standpoint. We certainly feel fortunate and thankful for the opportunity to play two outstanding Division I programs."
The Cougars will face Mesa State as well as the host Orediggers at the Colorado School of Mines Tournament on Nov. 17-18. The home opener is on Tuesday, Nov. 28 against two-time defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference champion Bloomfield College. Caldwell will host its own tournament, the Commerce Bank Classic, on Dec. 2-3 at the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars will play Mercy College on Friday, Dec. 2 and Dowling College on Saturday, Dec. 3, with Bloomfield also participating.
The rest of the non-conference schedule features a trip to New Hampshire to face St. Anselm College on Dec. 20 and Franklin Pierce College on Dec. 21. Adelphi University visits the Newman Center on Jan. 30 for the final non-conference game. All three teams are in the powerful Northeast Region along with the Cougars.
The conference schedule contains home and away games against the other 10 CACC squads. Highlights of the home slate include the Bloomfield game on Nov. 28, a Feb. 5 rematch with Dominican College, which defeated the Cougars in the quarterfinals of last year's CACC Tournament, and a Jan. 11 meeting with Philadelphia University, which is now a full member of the CACC after a provisional year in 2005-06. The Cougars and Deacons meet in Bloomfield on Jan. 24.
"Our non-conference schedule is very strong with games against some of the better teams in our region, as well as the two games in Colorado," Corino said. "And our conference has been improving every year. There aren't any easy games in our league, home or away.
"Also, we are thankful that Commerce Bank has agreed to sponsor our tournament that features two teams from the East Coast Conference and two from the CACC. We think it will be an exciting weekend of college basketball in the Newman Center."
The Cougars finished 18-13 in 2005-06, including a 14-8 conference record that placed them third in the CACC. Senior guard Jean Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood) and junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor) lead seven returnees from last year's squad. Georges averaged a team-best 17.3 point per game, while Perez tallied 16.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest as both players earned all-CACC second team honors. Perez has totaled 1,015 points in his career, becoming the first Caldwell player to score over 1,000 points before his junior season.
