USP'S PAULEY EARNS PHILADELPHIA AREA SMALL COLLEGE COACH OF THE YEAR ACCOLADES

PHILADELPHIA, PA - University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Head Men's Basketball Coach David Pauley was named the Philadelphia Area Small College Coaches Association Sam Cozen Coach of the Year for the 2006-07 season at the organization's Senior Recognition Banquet held earlier this week. Pauley shared this honor with Community College of Philadelphia's Robert "Dondi" DeShields.

Pauley (Temple '79, Barrington, N.J.), in his seventh season at the helm of the Devils, guided USP into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship game against Caldwell College. The Devils played a hard fought game before losing in the final seconds to the Cougars 61-60. USP was picked to finish ninth in the CACC pre-season coaches poll. USP finished the season with a 10-10 conference record and was 14-15 overall.

Two of Pauley's seniors on USP's 06-07 squad scored their 1,000th career point during the season. Eric Cangelosi was also honored as the Sam Cozen Small College Player of the Week in December. The 2006-07 season included two regular season wins over Philadelphia University, the CACC's regular season tri-champions. The wins were Pauley's first ever against longtime Rams Head Coach Herb Magee. USP also earned playoff victories on the road against Holy Family University and over second-seed Post University in the CACC semi-finals.

After serving as an assistant to longtime Head Coach and Small College Coaches Association Hall of Fame member Bob Morgan for 18 seasons, Pauley took over the head coaching duties in October of 2000 when Morgan announced his retirement. The Temple graduate guided USP to an 18-12 record that first season. Pauley has recorded 98 wins over his seven seasons as Head Coach of the Devils, the third most wins in school history behind Morgan's 598 (1969-2000) and Joseph Oakley's 131 (1931-52).

Pauley has been a longtime supporter of the Philadelphia Area Small College Coaches Association and still serves on their executive board. David was awarded the organization's John McAdams Service Award in 2006 for his years of dedication and commitment to supporting and promoting small college basketball in the Philadelphia Area.
