PHILADELPHIA, PA - University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's basketball player Bill Kurtz (Shawnee High School/Shamong, N.J.) was honored as the Andrew A. Mitchell South Jersey Small College Player of the Year at the Albert J. Carino Boys Basketball Club of South Jersey annual awards banquet held in Cherry Hill, New Jersey last night.

Kurtz shares this honor along with Thomas Baker of Rowan University. The senior guard becomes the third player from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia to earn this honor since the 2000-2001 season, joining Jason Wood (2001) and Chris Brattelli (2005). USP joins Rowan University/Glassboro State College (6) and Philadelphia University/Philadelphia College of Textile & Science (3) as the only schools to have at least three players earn the South Jersey Small College Player of the Year Award since its inception in 1978.

Kurtz, a senior guard, enjoyed his best offensive season since joining the Devils in 2003-04, averaging 13.9 points/game to finish second on the team in scoring. Bill led the team in free throw percentage (84.2%); three-point field goals made (74) and three-point field goal percentage (39.2%) and finished second on the team in assists with 71.

Bill's 84.2% free throw shooting average led the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). Kurtz was also second in the CACC in three-point field goals made per game (3.08), and ranked 36th nationally. The senior guard also ranks seventh in the league in three-point field goal percentage (61st nationally), tenth in the league in assists and 15th in scoring.

During the 2006-07 season, Kurtz became the 34th player in the 105-year history of men's basketball at the institution to score 1,000 points for their career. Bill finished his career with 1,268 points to rank 20th on the Devils all time list. In February, Kurtz became the Devils all-time leader in three-point field goals made; surpassing the mark of 253 set by Joe Miller (1991-95), finishing his career with 273. His 115 career steals ranks ninth on the Devils all-time list and his 276 career assists ranks 13th.

The former Shawnee High School athlete recently completed his fourth and final season of play for the Devils. Kurtz will graduate in May with a degree in Pharmaceutical Marketing/Management.
