PHILADELPHIA'S BURNS NAMED CACC MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NEW HAVEN, CT - Christian Burns of Philadelphia University has earned Player of the Week honors in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) for the week ending Sunday, January 7. Omari Knox of Bloomfield College has been selected as the Rookie of the Week.

Burns, a 6-9 senior center from Hamilton, NJ, posted averages of 21.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists and shot 63.3 percent from the field last week. He poured in 29 points, along with 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in a victory over Goldey-Beacom.

Knox, a sophomore guard from Brooklyn, NY, averaged 16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per-game in two games last week. He tallied 19 points (6-for-12 shooting from the field), four rebound, four assists and one steal against Mercy.

Honorable Mention

Ryan Lancaster, Holy Family - Averaged 17.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals in a 2-0 week for the Tigers.

Keith Dundas, USP - Averaged 18.0 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting 69.6-percent from the field in a 1-1 week.

CACC Notes

Caldwell - Senior guard Jean Georges was named the Division II Player of the Month for December by NJ Hoops, an online publication that covers high school basketball in New Jersey. Georges averaged 16.9 points in eight games last month. In an 82-58 win against Felician College on Dec. 5, he became the 13th player in Caldwell men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point milestone for his career.

Felician - Senior F Sydir Mitchell has scored 20+ points in seven of Felician's 11 games, and scored at least 25 on six occasions. He is averaging 20.3 points after scoring 7.9 ppg a year ago.

Holy Family - Holy Family improved to 3-1 against the Northeast-10 with the win over American International. Like the women, the men are currently fifth in Division II in scoring defense at 55.7 points per game and are 13th nationally in field-goal percentage defense at 38.8. For the first time this season, the Tigers were outrebounded by an opponent, as AIC outrebounded Holy Family 39-38.

Philadelphia - With his team's win over Goldey-Beacom College on January 4th, Head Coach Herb Magee now has 823 career coaching victories, just five shy of Clarence "Big House" Gaines' NCAA Division II record of 828.

Post - Post opened the 2007 calendar year at home with an 83-61 defeat of in-state rival New Haven on Jan. 4. The Eagles received 14 points each from sophomore Jesse Iyalekhue and junior Arthur Robertson. Robertson recorded his 700th career point in the victory. Iyalekhue recorded a season-high for points, and recorded three blocks. Sophomore AJ Reitter netted 12 points on four three-pointers, and senior Gary Shick recorded 11. On Saturday, the Eagles stumbled at USP, falling 64-57. Shick led all scorers with 21 points connecting on 8-of-11 from the field. Junior Peter Lawal finished with 11 points and eight rebounds and also recorded his 500th point for the Eagles.

USP - USP has now won four of its last five games. Bill Kurtz became just the 34th player in school history to reach the 1000 point plateau in the first half of the Devils game against Post on Saturday, nailing a three-point field goal with 7:30 left to reach the mark. He finished the game with 18 points and has 1,011 for his career. Kurtz joins teammate Eric Cangelosi as just the seventh pair of teammates in the 104-year history of men's basketball at the institution to record their 1000th career points in the same season and the first two to do so since the 2000-01 season.
