POST AND WILMINGTON TO COMPETE AT NCAA GOLF NORTHEAST REGIONAL
April 30, 2008
NEW HAVEN, CT-Post University and Wilmington University will both compete at the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Golf Tournament in Middletown, DE, on Monday, May 5 to Wednesday, May 7. Wilmington will serve as the host at Back Creek Golf Club. Post is the No. 3 seed at the event, while Wilmington is the seventh seed. Post is making its fourth consecutive trip to the regional, while Wilmington is a first-time participant. Furthermore, Dominican College senior Brian Mackey will compete as an individual.
Post is perhaps the hottest team in the region after winning the last three tournaments it entered. The Eagles won their third straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship on April 15, which was held at the same Back Creek course in Middletown. The Eagles won the tournament with a two-day total of 601. Wilmington finished second after firing a 603. Post also won the Dowling Invitational on April 7 and the American International Invitational on April 22.
Post freshman David McGregor was the Individual Medalist at the CACC Championship after shooting a 142 (75, 67). For his efforts, he was named the CACC Rookie of the Year. Fellow rookie Ryan Philipp has performed very well of late. He was the individual medalist at the Dowling Invitational and finished third at both the CACC Championship and the AIC Invitational. A student-athlete from Post has earned CACC Golfer of the Week honors in five of the six weeks the award has been handed out.
Wilmington will be playing in its first NCAA Regional. The Wildcats feature a tight group of golfers, as its five performers at the CACC Championship all finished within five strokes of each other. Junior Vinny Nardo was named to the All-Conference team by virtue of tying for fifth with a two-day total of 154 (75, 79).
Brian Mackey will be one of five individuals to appear at the regional. The top five individuals in the region who are not a member of one of the participating teams take part in the event each year. Mackey has established himself as one of the top golfers in the region and tied for fifth at the CACC Championship.
Adelphi is the number-one seed for the event, and is followed by No. 2 Bryant, Post, Pace, St. Thomas Aquinas, UMass-Lowell, Wilmington and Bentley. Bentley received an automatic bid to the regional because of its victory at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. Post is the No. 3 seed for the third consecutive season after receiving the CACC's automatic bid.
Ten regions comprise NCAA Division II men's golf, and there will be five Super Regional Tournaments to determine the field for the NCAA Division II Championships, May 14-17 in Houston, Texas. The top team from each region within the Super Regionals and the top individual not with a team from each Super Regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals.
