WILMINGTON SWEEPS DEVILS IN VOLLEYBALL ACTION

NEW CASTLE, DE ? The Wildcats of Wilmington College swept the visiting Devils of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in CACC volleyball action on Wednesday evening. The win came in front of a packed house, as the Pratt Gymnasium was filled with fans there to see a former Wildcat standout, Jessica (Phipps) Weller, inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
Wilmington took all three games by identical 30-27 scores and came away with the pivotal conference victory. The Wildcats were paced by senior outside hitter Kristin Wiedeman's double-double effort. Wiedeman led the offense with 16 kills and added 20 digs. Freshman middle hitter Katie Mason chipped in with 11 kills while sophomore middle Brittani Leathern added 10 digs and four blocks. Junior libero Shannon Freel had 26 digs in her first home action of the season, while fellow junior, setter Cheyann Gilroy had 38 assists for the Wildcats.
The Devils were led by Lindsey Wenderoth's 16 kills and 10 digs. Kristin Lechner chipped in with 13 kills and 13 digs, while Andrea Cardine added seven kills and 17 digs. Libero Claire Tauschek recorded 18 digs and setter Ladonna Landmesser had 39 assists for USP.
Following the game, Wilmington improved to 6-4 in the CACC and 6-17 on the season, while USP dropped to 4-4 in the conference and 7-10 overall. The Wildcats return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host the Cougars of Caldwell College in a CACC match beginning at 1:00 PM. It marks the final home contest of the season, and the Wildcats will recognize seniors Kristin Wiedeman, Jenny Todd, and Katy Hickman prior to the match.
