WILDCATS DEFEAT USP IN THREE

WILMINGTON, DE - The Wildcats of Wilmington College swept the visiting University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Devils in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball match last night before a packed house at Pratt Gymnasium in Wilmington, Delaware.

Wilmington took all three games by identical scores of 30-27 and improved to 6-17 overall and 6-4 in league play. The Devils dropped to 7-10 overall and 4-4 in league play.

USP was paced offensively by Lindsey Wenderoth's (Jr., Owings Mills HS/Owings Mills, Md.) 16 kills. Kirsten Lechner (Fr., DePaul Catholic/ Wayne, N.J.) added 13 kills as the Devils recorded a total of 47 kills in 147 attempts (.156 attack percentage). Defensively, the Devils had four players in double figures for digs with Claire Tauschek (So., Middleton HS/Verona, Wis.) leading the way with 18. Andrea Cardine (Fr., Reading Central Catholic/ Temple, Pa.) added 17, Lechner 13 and Wenderoth 10.

The Wildcats was paced by Kristin Wiedeman's 16 kills and 18 digs. Katie Mason added 11 kills and Shannon Freel had a game-high 20 digs.

USP had an early 6-2 lead in the first game before the Wildcats rallied with a 7-2 run to take a 9-8 lead. The next eights points saw three lead changes and three ties as the Wildcats went up by two 13-11. USP rallied to tie the game again and took a 17-15 lead on a service ace by Ladonna Landmesser (So., Archbishop Prendergast HS/Drexel Hill, Pa.). The Wildcats countered with a 6-1 run to regain the lead 21-18. A kill by Wenderoth late in the game tied the match again at 24-all but this was as close as USP would get as Wiedeman produced the kill that ended game one.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 15-8 lead in game two before the Devils rallied to make the game close. Two straight kills by Wenderoth cut the lead to five, 15-10. Michelle Hogga (Sr., St. Pius X HS/Linfield, Pa.) followed with a kill and Wilmington's Brittani Leathern had an attack error to give the devils two more points. Cardine's ace made the score 15-13 before the Wildcats regained the serve and went back up by four 17-13. Kills by Wenderoth, Tauschek and Olja Marjanovic (Jr., Chaminade-Madonna Prep/North Miami Beach, Fla.) later tied the game at 18-all. The Devils managed to tie the game four more times down the stretch with the last one at 26-26 before the Wildcats scored four of the final five points to win game two.

USP jumped out to a 13-8 lead in game three with nine of the 13 points coming on kills. Wilmington then ran off four straight points to pull within one, 13-12 before the string was broken by a Wildcat service error. Wilmington rallied to tie the game at 15-all and took their first lead, 18-17 since the 6-5 mark on a block by Mason and Wiedeman on Marjanovic's attack attempt. USP came back to tie the game at 22-all and took a 24-22 lead on Wenderoth's 16th kill of the match. The Wildcats then scored four of the next five points to take a 26-25 lead. Lechner's kill tied the game again at 26-all before the Wildcats again ran off four of the next five points to close out the game and the match.

The Devils next game will be at Bloomfield College on Saturday, October 7, 2006. Tip off is slated for noon.
