LIONS TAME DEVILS IN THREE

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Georgian Court University Lions used momentum gained from a come-from behind win in the first game of their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's volleyball matchup against the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia to shutout the Devils 3-0 at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The loss drops the Devils to 7-9 overall and 4-3 in league play. The first-place Lions improve to 11-9 overall and 8-0 in conference games.
The Lions scored the final six points of the first game to win 31-29. Georgian Court took game two 30-28 and closed out the match with a decisive 30-17 game three triumph.
Andrea Cardine (Fr., Reading Central Catholic/ Temple, Pa.) paced the Devils offensive attack with six kills while Claire Tauschek (So., Middleton HS/Verona, Wis.) and Lindsey Wenderoth (Jr., Owings Mills HS/Owings Mills, Md.) paced the defense with 15 and 12 digs respectively. Cardine's six kills was the lowest team high of the season in that department.
Ann Casado led the Lions with 18 kills. Ana Cruz and Rebecca Walczek each had 13 digs for Georgian Court.
The Devils held leads of 16-9 after the first complete service rotation and 25-21 after the second. Both teams exchanged serves over the next eight points with neither team gaining an advantage as the Devils held a 29-25 lead before the Lions forced a sideout to pull within three 29-26. Casado then served five straight points to pull victory from the jaws of defeat as the Devils fell 31-29 in game one.
USP trailed 5-1 early in game two but rallied to pull within one 12-11 after the first service rotation and led 20-19 after the second complete rotation. Georgian Court later tied the game at 23-all and again at 26-all. The Devils forced a sideout to take a 27-26 lead before the Lions scored the next three points to lead 29-27. The Devils regained the serve to make the score 29-28 before Georgian Court forced a sideout to take the game 30-28.
In game three, the Lions opened an 8-1 lead and led 15-10 after the first service rotation. The Lions then scored five straight points to boost their lead to 10, 20-10 and never looked back en route to the 30-17 win to take the match in three straight.
The Devils will be on the road for their next two games, taking on Wilmington College on Thursday, October 5, 2006 and Bloomfield College on Saturday, October 7, 2006.
