WATERBURY, Conn.-For the third consecutive game, the Post University men's soccer team let up the first goal of the game, rally to tie, and go into overtime, as the Eagles did just that against Concordia College on Monday afternoon at LaMoy Field.
However, this time, Head Coach Ted Haley was not watching the same match over again, as sophomore Lior Buton (Haifa, Israel/Hugim) scored with 2:19 left in the first overtime session to give the Eagles a 2-1 non-conference victory.
With the win the Eagles improve to 6-4-4 overall, while Concordia falls to 2-9 on the season. Post is now unbeaten in its last five matches, going 3-0-2 in that span, and unbeaten in seven of their last eight matches going 4-1-3.
Concordia broke the ice at the 15:42 mark, when Mario Suarez put it past sophomore Michael Aschliman (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) who was making his first start of the season. Aschliman split time with junior Marco Gasper (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck), and made two saves in the first half. Gasper stopped each of the three shots on goal that he faced.
The Eagles knotted the score at 1-1 in second half, as freshman Eurica Trowers (Bronx, N.Y./Clinton) controlled a rebound off a free kick from freshman Johan Pineda (Lima, Peru/San Jose) and fired a shot into the back of the net, 65:20 into the contest.
Both teams had chances to end the match in regulation, as Pineda found junior Maurice Johnson (Bronx, N.Y./Bryant & Stratton) on a cross-pitch fast break. Johnson ripped a shot, but Concordia keeper Ivan Rodiguez made one of his 11 save on the afternoon to keep it tied at 1-1.
About a minute later, Concordia had a chance to take a lead, as Steffan Dimitrov tried a bicycle kick that went over the crossbar.
In the extra session, Post came down on the break, and Pineda's found junior Raleigh Woodburn (St. Catherines, Jamaica /Dinthill) who directed it to Buton who fired a shot that went into the lower left-hand side of the goal, giving the Eagles the victory.
Post held a 30-12 advantage in shots, and a 5-3 margin in corner kicks. Post was whistled for 16 fouls, while Concordia was called for 13.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday afternoon, as they host Assumption College for a non-conference match at LaMoy Field, beginning at 3 p.m.
