CHESTNUT HILL'S HENRY TABBED CACC BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Chestnut Hill catcher Bryan Henry has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, April 25. Joe Harris of Wilmington University was named Pitcher of the Week, while Chestnut Hill's Bob Hopkins was the choice for Rookie of the Week.

Henry, a 6-3 junior catcher from Columbus, N.J., hit .483 in seven games last week with eight runs batted in, six runs scored, six doubles, one triple and one home run. He went 6-for-6 with three runs and four RBI in a victory at Nyack and went 4-for-4 with a pair or runs and three RBI in a win over USP.

Harris, a 6-3 junior left-hander from Douglassville, Pa., collected a win and a save last week for the Wildcats. He hurled a complete game against Chestnut Hill and allowed only five hits and one earned run while striking out nine. Later in the week, he saved a game at Concordia by fanning the only two batters he faced.

Hopkins, a 5-9 freshman right-hander from Philadelphia, went 1-0 with a 0.00 earned-run average in two relief appearances last week. He earned a win against Nyack, going 4.1 innings and allowed five hits and fanning four. He followed with a perfect two innings in a victory versus USP.

Honorable Mention
Joel Sanchez, Felician (Jr., RHP, Hialeah, Fla.) - Allowed no runs and seven hits in 7.2 IP, with seven strikeouts, in a win over Philadelphia

Steve Godowski, Bloomfield (Sr., RHP, Sayerville, N.J.) - Threw a complete game shutout against Nyack, allowing nine hits.

Tim McCarthy, Post (Sr., LHP, Waterbury, Conn. - Hurled a complete game against USP with one earned run allowed on five hits, to go with seven strikeouts.

Todd Craig, Dominican (Sr., RHP, Shenendoah, Pa.) - Picked up two wins last week with a 3.00 ERA against Nyack and Caldwell.

Dan Robinson, Dominican (Jr., OF/DH, Massapequa, N.Y. - Hit .370 in a 4-3 week with nine RBI, six runs scored and two triples.

Tyler Mentzer, Philadelphia (Sr., SS, Gettysburg, Pa.) - Hit .500 for the week with four RBI and five runs scored.

CACC Notes

Bloomfield - The Deacons were able to go 3-3 over the six-game week, including a double-header sweep of CACC rival Nyack. Junior righty Steve Godowski went the distance in game one, scattering nine hits while striking out four in his complete-game shutout effort to pick up his first victory of the season. Sophomore righty Brad Smith followed suit in game two, going nine innings and allowing two earned runs while striking out ten Warriors. Saturday afternoon, southpaw Sean Stimpfel went seven innings surrendering a single run against Queens, but the seven-inning affair went into extra innings with the score knotted at a run apiece. Junior reliever Dave Ricci turned in four scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win, and Anthony Fratto drove in the winning run to give the Deacons the 2-1 11-inning victory. Stimpfel also saw some time at first base over the course of the week, hitting .333 with four RBI. Junior outfielder Alberto Ruiz continued his outstanding season with a .320 week, driving in a pair of runs and registering nine total bases.

Caldwell - The Cougars defeated Felician twice and lost a pair to Dominican last week to sit in third place in the CACC standings with an 11-6 conference record. A triple by sophomore Jorge Ynoa drove in the game-winning run in the ninth inning of a 5-4 win over Felician on Thursday. Senior Robert Casal pitched a complete game in Friday’s 4-2 win over the Golden Falcons for his school-record 23rd career victory. Senior Ray Keelan had four hits in the doubleheader with Dominican. Senior Pitcher Buddy Riggs entered last week leading the nation in earned run average at 0.64.

Felician - Senior C Marcos Torres became Felician’s all-time hits leader on Friday, earning his 210th and 211th during a home loss to Caldwell. Mike Rooth (2003-06), also a catcher, was the former record holder.

Philadelphia - Philadelphia went 2-1 on the week, getting a big win over USP, scoring four runs in the eighth inning to win the game.  Another highlight on the week was a two-run homer from Tyler Mentzer during the second game against Felician College.  The will face off against Chestnut Hill on 4/27.

USP - The Devils played for the Bill Giles Invitational Championship at Citizens Bank Park for the second time in the last three years on Tuesday, losing to nationally ranked West Chester University 8-2. Freshman Kyle Davis (Garnet Valley, Pa.) became just the second baseball player in school history to record 50 or more hits in a season, reaching the mark vs. Chestnut Hill on Thursday – He now has 51 for the year. Junior Mark Perry (Toms River, N.J.) and senior Mark Forbes (Hockessin, Del.) moved into 10th and 11th place respectively on the Devils all-time hit list this week – Perry has 112 hits while Forbes has 105. Junior Pete LaRocco (Sewell, N.J.) needs four hits to reach 100 for his career and ranks 16th on the Devils all-time list with 96. Perry’s two doubles in game two vs. Post move hit into a tie for sixth place on the Devils all-time doubles list with 25 career two-baggers. The Devils will close out their season this week with a single CACC game against Philadelphia University on Thursday and a doubleheader at Felician on Saturday.
