PHILADELPHIA, PA - University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and head baseball coach Frank Angeloni are pleased to announce their incoming class of freshman for the 2009-2010 season.
The Devils will look to shore up their middle infield
defense with the addition of shortstop Kyle Davis from Garnet
Valley High School. Davis, a four-year player for the
Jaguars helped lead Garnet Valley to a berth in the PIAA state
playoffs before bowing out in the first round to St. Joseph's Prep.
Davis has played on the Delco Carpenter Cup Team for the past
two years and made the AAU All-Tournament Team in 2008 while
playing for the Delco Diamonds. Davis may also see some time
on the pitcher's mound for the Devils.
Also joining the Devils in the infield will be First Team All-Tri
County Conference selection Nick Core from Gloucester Catholic High
School. Core, an infielder who can play both corner
positions, belted 11 doubles this season, the second best total in
southern New Jersey in 2009. Core was also a second Team
Tri-County and first team All South Jersey Non Public Selection in
2008.
Core's Gloucester Catholic teammate Mike Gartland will be joining
him at USP. Gartland, an outfielder, has earned first team
All-Tri-County Conference honors in each of the past two seasons.
Gartland recorded 12 doubles this season to lead all players
in southern New Jersey and played for the Tri-Cape Carpenter Cup
team this season.
Archbishop Carroll's Nick Szalejko will provide some added defense
in the outfield next season. Szalejko did not commit an error
in his entire high school career. The three-time 2nd Team
All- Catholic League outfielder also has some pop with the bat,
hitting .451 this season with 16 runs scored.
Coach Angeloni's third outfield scholarship recruit is Will Rebman
from Towanda high School. Rebman, a varsity starter since his
freshman year, has earned all-conference honors three straight
years. He helped lead the Knights to a berth in the PIAA
District 4 championship game where they lost to Loyalsock High
School. Rebman may also see time behind the plate catching
next season.
Also coming out for the team next season will be Lawrence High
School (New York) second baseman/pitcher Joseph Kenny; Central High
School (Philadelphia) outfielder Abdur Farhan; Archbishop Ryan High
School (Philadelphia) catcher Jerry Smith and Ocean Township High
School (New Jersey) utility player Richard Oh.
Davis and Rebman will be majoring in exercise science/wellness
management. Gartland and Core will be pursuing Doctor of
Pharmacy degrees while at the institution as will Oh. Core is
a pharmaceutical marketing/management major as is Farhan.
Kenny and Smith are in the pre-professional program at
USP.
