WALK-OFF HOME RUN AND A SHUTOUT HIGHLIGHT OPENING DAY OF CACC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
May 8, 2008
WILMINGTON, DE--A walk-off home run and a complete game shutout by a freshman highlighted the opening day of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament today in Wilmington, DE. Caldwell outfielder Adric Saxon crushed a two-out, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat Dominican, and Philadelphia freshman righty Jared Farbman hurled a shutout against Felician. Philadelphia and Caldwell will play at noon on Friday for the right to play in the championship round of the tournament.
The No. 2 Cougars defeated No. 3 Dominican, 6-5, while top seeded Philadelphia won its game against No. 4 Felician, 13-0. Felician was eliminated from the tournament later in the day with a 7-1 loss to Dominican.
In the first game of the day, Caldwell led 5-2 entering the top of the ninth inning, but the No. 3 Chargers mounted a rally to tie the game and force extra innings. Dominican got some help from Caldwell in the comeback, as they scored the runs as a result of two wild pitches and a passed ball. The rally set up the dramatic finish in the bottom of the 10th. The inning started harmless enough, as the first two Caldwell hitters struck out. But, Saxon then stepped to the plate and crushed a homer to the deepest part of the field, over the right-center field fence. Saxon finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI.
Caldwell junior starter Stephen Pfeil went 7.2 innings and allowed five hits and two runs, while fanning 10, in getting a no-decision. Caldwell improves to 30-17 this season with the win.
In the second game of the day, Philadelphia (22-20) freshman right-hander Jared Farbman threw a complete game shutout and allowed only five hits to go with 10 strikeouts in the 13-0 victory. Senior outfielder JungMin Lee led the way at the plate, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore DH Mike Anderson added a 3-for-4 effort with two runs and two RBI, and sophomore 1B Rob Fisher went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI. Philadelphia scored runs in every inning except for the fifth and eight, and broke things open with two runs in the second and third frames and three more in the fourth.
In the final game of the day, Felician was eliminated from the double-elimination tournament with a 7-1 loss to Dominican (27-24). Senior right-hander Michael Mondesir led the way by going 8.0 innings and allowing only two hits and one run with nine strikeouts to improve to 6-2 this season. Dominican jumped on top early with single runs in each of the first two innings, followed by two more in the third for a 4-0 lead. Freshman DH Michael Munoz led the Charger offense with a 3-for-4 performance with two runs scored. Classmate Dan Robinson added a 2-for-4 effort with one run scored. Freshman shortstop Hector Bello knocked in the only run for Felician (26-24).
