2007 CACC Baseball Weekly Awards February 27 Player of the Week: Frank Quintana, Felician (Sr., 1B, Miami, FL): Hit .562 in a 3-1 week, belted three home runs, drove in 10 runs and scored six times. He had a slugging percentage of 1.312 and went 3-for-5 with two home runs, three runs and four RBI in an 11-10 win over Queens. Also went 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and one run scored in a 13-5 win over Molloy. Stole four bases during the week, including two against Mercy. Pitcher of the Week: Eric Hines, Caldwell (So., RHP, Milltown, NJ): Earned a win over Dowling by hurling 8.0 innings and allowing only two hits, no earned runs and fanning four. Dowling scored two unearned runs in the game. Rookie of the Week: Adric Saxon, Caldwell (Fr., OF, Coral Springs, FL): Hit .619 in his first collegiate action in helping the Cougars to a 4-0 start. Hit one home run, collected nine RBI and scored 10 times. Went 5-for-6 with four runs scored and four RBI in a 22-9 season-opening win over Molloy and added four hits and two runs scored against Dowling. March 12 Player of the Week: Jason Rust, Wilmington (Sr., OF, 6-1, Greenwood, DE): Hit .333 and belted two home runs in seven games for the Wildcats last week. Drove in six runs, scored four times and also had three doubles. Went 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI in a 13-5 win over Dowling. Pitcher of the Week: Mike Mundy, Wilmington (Sr., RHP, 6-1, Newark, DE): Collected a win and a save last week while not allowing a run in 8.0 innings of work. Went 7.0 innings and allowed five hits with seven strikeouts in a win over Northwood and also saved a game against Dowling while fanning one batter. Rookie of the Week: Jeff Calabrese, Felician (Fr., RHP, Freehold, NJ): Went 1-1 in three relief appearances last week. Earned a victory over Nyack after a perfect three innings of work to go with three strikeouts. Did not allow an earned run and fanned five in 4.1 innings for the week. March 19 Player of the Week: Keith Heck, Philadelphia (Sr., 1B, Cherry Hill, NJ): Hit .556 in five games last week and knocked in 10 total runs. Went 4-for-6 with five RBI against nationally-ranked California (PA) in a 14-13 win. Followed by going 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI against West Georgia. Pitcher of the Week: Daniel Bucci, Dominican (Sr., RHP, Dobbs Ferry, NY): Collected a win over Pace University by hurling 8.0 innings and allowing only three hits and one run while fanning nine batters. Co-Rookies of the Week: John Pugh, Philadelphia (Fr., RHP, Coatsville, PA) and Robert Casal, Caldwell (Fr., RHP, Howard Beach, NY): Pugh picked up a win against #2 Georgia College and State University in his first collegiate start. Worked 7.0 innings and allowed only three hits and one run while fanning two batters. In two appearances, Casal allowed two runs in 10 innings of work, while picking up a win against Lincoln Memorial. Fanned nine batters during the week. March 26 Player of the Week: Jason Rust, Wilmington (Sr., 6-0, OF, Greenwood, DE) - Hit four home runs, drove in 11 runs and scored six times in a 5-1 week for the Wildcats. He blasted three home runs in a 13-9 win over Millersville and had six RBI in the game. Hit two doubles and drove in three runs in a 5-4 win over Bloomsburg. Pitcher of the Week: Brendan Wyman, Post (So., 6-0, LHP, Manchester, CT) - Took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against Philadelphia on Saturday. Went 8.1 innings, allowed one hit and one run while fanning three in the 7-3 victory. Rookie of the Week: Adric Saxon, Caldwell (Fr., 6-1, OF, Coral Gables, FL) - Hit .286 in a 2-3 week with one home run, four doubles, nine RBI and four runs scored. Went 2-for-5 with two runs, four RBI and two doubles in a 14-7 win over Carson Newman. April 2 Player of the Week: Keith Heck, Philadelphia (Sr., 1B, Cherry Hill, NJ) - Hit .458 for the week with a .1333 slugging percentage. He smacked seven home runs in six games, drove in 15 runs and scored nine times. He hit two home runs in a win over Nyack and drove in four runs twice. He notched at least one RBI in each game. Pitcher of the Week: Joseph Catanese, Dominican (Sr., RHP, Huntington, NY) - Picked up two wins last week, one as a starter and one in relief. Went 7.2 innings against USP and fanned nine while allowing three runs on Saturday. Earned a win in relief against Felician on Monday, hurling 2.2 innings, fanning five and allowing one run. He did not walk a batter during the week. Rookie of the Week: Richard Melendez, Felician (Fr., IF, Miami, FL) - Hit .480 in six games with a .480 on-base percentage. Drove in eight runs, including four in a 12-11 win over Wilmington. Scored twice, hit three doubles and stole one base. April 9 Player of the Week: Nicolas Cucchiarella, Bloomfield (So., C, Katonah, NY) - Hit .800 (8-for-10) in a 3-0 week for the Deacons. Went 3-for-3 with one home run and three RBI in a victory over Wilmington. In a double-header sweep at American International, he went 5-for-7 with two RBI and two runs scored. Pitcher of the Week: Billy Gleason, Nyack (Sr., RHP, 6-4, Hollywood, FL) - Hurled a complete-game in handing league-rival Dominican its first conference loss of the season. Went 9.0 innings and allowed eight hits and three runs while fanning seven. He walked just one batter. Rookie of the Week: Marcos Torres, Felician (Fr., Miami, FL) - Hit .333 for the week and hit his first career home run against Caldwell. He finished that game 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI. He drove in four runs for the week. April 16 Player of the Week: Jason Rust, Wilmington (Sr., 6-0 OF, Greenwood, DE) - Hit .524 in five games with six home runs, including four in a victory over USP. He collected 10 RBI's against the Devils and drove in 17 for the week while scoring 10 times. He went 5-for-5 against USP and added a 2-for-4 effort with a home run and four RBI against West Chester. Pitcher of the Week: Joseph O'Donnell, Bloomfield (Sr., LHP, Middlesex, NJ) - Recorded Bloomfield's first-ever no-hitter in game two at Post University Saturday afternoon. He fanned seven in the game, walked five and allowed one unearned run on a passed ball. Post had pounded out 20 hits in the first game of the double-header with the Deacons. Rookie of the Week: Raymond Keelan, Caldwell (Fr., Barnegat, NJ) - Hit .643 last week in four games, including the game-winning RBI in an 8-7 win over Nyack. He homered in wins over Dominican and USP and collected six RBI and scored six times for the week. April 23 Player of the Week: Zach Mentzer, Philadelphia (Jr., SS, Gettysburg, PA) - Hit .714 in a rain-shortened week for the Rams. Led Philadelphia to a sweep of Dominican on Saturday by batting .714 with one home run, six RBI and two runs scored. Drove in a career-high five runs with a triple and a home run in the opener before going 3-for-4 with a run, RBI and stolen base in game 2. Pitcher of the Week: Billy Gleason, Nyack (Sr., RHP, 6-4, Hollywood, FL) - Picked up two wins last week, one as a starter and one in relief. He threw a 9-inning shutout against Post on Wednesday and then closed an extra-inning win over Bloomfield on Saturday by working the final three innings in a 9-7 win. Rookie of the Week: Robert Casal, Caldwell (Fr., 5-11, RHP, Howard Beach, NY) - Earned a complete game victory over Wilmington Saturday afternoon. Went 9.0 innings and allowed only five hits and one run while fanning 12 batters. The Cougars won the game, 2-1. April 30 Co-Players of the Week: Frank Quintana, Felician (Sr., 6-1, 1B, Miami, FL) and Jason Rust, Wilmington (Sr., 6-0, OF, Greenwood, DE) - Quintana and Rust posted nearly identical stats last week. Both recorded three home runs with six RBI and seven runs scored in five games played. Rust hit .529 for the week with one double and Quintana hit .429 with two stolen bases. Both led their teams to 3-2 weeks. Pitcher of the Week: Matt Dilgen, Dominican (Sr., RHP, Staten Island, NY) - Picked up two wins as a starter last week against Post and Bryant. Hurled 15 total innings and allowed only 12 hits and one run (0.60 ERA) to go with 12 strikeouts. He went 7.2 innings against Post and did not allow a run while fanning eight. Rookie of the Week: Omar Velazquez, Caldwell (Fr., pitcher/outfielder, Astoria, NY) - Earned two wins on the mound and also hit .296 at the plate with one home run, five RBI and seven runs scored. He picked up wins against Felician and Dominican while allowing five runs and fanning 12 in 11.0 innings of work on the mound. May 7 Player of the Week: Frank Quintana, Felician (Sr., 6-1, 1B, Miami, FL) - Hit .550 with four home runs and 13 RBI in leading Felician to a 5-1 week. Scored 14 runs, stole two bases and had two doubles while hitting for a 1.250 slugging percentage. Homered in the final three games of the week and knocked in five runs and homered in a 13-12 loss to Dominican. He had at least one RBI in all six games. Pitcher of the Week: Matt Dilgen, Dominican (Sr., RHP, Staten Island, NY) - Pitched the Chargers into the CACC Tournament in a must-win game against Bloomfield Saturday afternoon. He went 8.0 innings, scattered four hits and did not allow an earned run while fanning six. Rookie of the Week: Richard Melendez, Felician (Fr., 2B, Miami, FL) - Hit .429 in a 5-1 week for the Golden Falcons with seven RBI and five runs scored. Collected five doubles and stole one base. Went 4-for-5 with a run and two RBI in game 2 at USP and drove in two runs in both games of a DH against Bloomfield. May 14 Player and Pitcher of the Week: Joe Matterer, Wilmington (Jr., RHP, Dover, DE) - Helped lead Wilmington to the 2007 CACC Tournament Championship by hurling a complete-game shutout against Dominican on Friday afternoon. He scattered four hits, walked two and fanned five in the 1-0 victory. Rookie of the Week: Adric Saxon, Caldwell (Fr., OF, Coral Springs, FL) - Hit .533 with seven RBI and five runs scored at the CACC Tournament. He recorded one triple and two doubles. Went 3-for-4 with five RBI against Dominican on Thursday and also went 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the championship game against Wilmington. |
