NEW HAVEN, CT - Felician College's Frank Quintana has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Baseball Player of the Year, according to balloting released today. It is Quintana's fourth Player of the Year award in 2007. Four other student-athletes from Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) institutions earned a spot on the ECAC All-Star team.
In addition to Quintana, who made the team as a first baseman, Caldwell College freshman pitcher Robert Casal was selected, along with Dominican College sophomore shortstop Jose Made, and Wilmington College senior outfielder Jason Rust and junior utility player Brian Testa.
Quintana, a senior from Miami, FL, hit .405 with 16 home runs, 59 runs scored and 59 runs batted in last season. He led the CACC in six statistical categories, including stolen bases (23). He is Felician's all-time leader in homers (35), runs and RBI. Earlier this summer, Quintana was named CACC Player of the Year, New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division II/III Player of the Year, and Daktronics Division II Northeast Region Player of the Year.
Casal, a freshman righty from Howard Beach, NY, led Caldwell in victories, earned run average, innings pitched (74 2/3) and strikeouts (75). A first team All-CACC selection, Casal also earned All-Northeast Region second team honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Daktronics. He finished the year with a 10-1 record and a 3.74 earned run average.
Made, who was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, hit .338 for the year with four home runs, 38 runs batted in, 10 doubles and 29 runs scored while going 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts. Made, who is from Binghamton, NY, was a first team All-CACC selection and a second team All-Northeast Region pick by Daktronics.
Rust, who hails from Greenwood, DE, led the CACC in home runs and RBI this season with 21 and 62, respectively. He hit .369 with a league-leading .815 slugging percentage. He blasted two home runs in three games in leading the Wildcats to the CACC Tournament Championship. He was a first team All-CACC choice and an All-Northeast Region first team pick by both Daktronics and ABCA/Rawlings.
Testa, who is from Wilmington, DE, earned a .318 batting average with seven home runs and 45 RBI in 44 games played. He also recorded 14 doubles and stole seven bases. He was a first team All-CACC pick and was tabbed second team All-Northeast Region by Daktronics.
