QUINTANA NAMED CACC BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NEW HAVEN, CT - Frank Quintana of Felician College has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, May 6. Matt Dilgen of Dominican College was selected Pitcher of the Week and Richard Melendez of Felician was the pick for Rookie of the Week.
Quintana, a senior 1B from Miami, FL, hit .550 with four home runs and 13 RBI in leading Felician to a 5-1 week. He scored 14 runs, stole two bases and had two doubles while hitting for a 1.250 slugging percentage. He homered in the final three games of the week and knocked in five runs and homered in a 13-12 loss to Dominican. He had at least one RBI in all six games.
Dilgen, a senior right-hander from Staten Island, NY, pitched the Chargers into the CACC Tournament in a must-win game against Bloomfield Saturday afternoon. He went 8.0 innings, scattered four hits and did not allow an earned run while fanning six.
Melendez, a freshman 2B from Miami, FL, hit .429 in a 5-1 week for the Golden Falcons with seven RBI and five runs scored. He collected five doubles and stole one base. He went 4-for-5 with a run and two RBI in game 2 at USP and drove in two runs in both games of a DH against Bloomfield.
Honorable Mention
Ryan DePolo, Post - Hit .563 in a 3-0 week with seven runs, two RBI and two doubles. Had four hits in a win over Caldwell.
Brendan Wyman, Post- Picked up a win and a save last week and did not allow an earned run in 7.2 IP. Fanned 10 and walked three.
Peter Gilardo, Dominican - Hit three home runs along with a .500 average for the week. Drove in six runs and scored five times.
CACC Notes
Caldwell - The Cougars wrapped up their second CACC regular-season crown and earned the No. 1 seed in the CACC Tournament with an 11-5 conference record. Caldwell, which won the 2003 CACC regular-season crown, captured the 2004 CACC Tournament and advanced to the program's first NCAA Northeast Region Tournament. Last week the Cougars held onto the No. 3 spot in the Northeast Region Poll released by the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee on May 2. They also were seventh in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Northeast Region Poll. Freshman Adric Saxon continues to lead the nation in runs batted in per game (1.61), and was seventh in home runs per game (0.42). Freshman Omar Velazquez ranked eighth in runs per game (1.35). As a team, the Cougars are seventh nationally in runs per game (9.0) and eighth in home runs per game (1.35).
Felician - Felician hit .372 and averaged 12.0 runs and 15.3 hits per game in its six games last week. Senior 1B Frank Quintana became the school's all-time RBI leader, passing former teammate Mike Rooth with a grand slam during an Apr. 30 loss at Dominican. Quintana has 146 career RBI; Rooth had 136 from 2003-06. On Saturday, Quintana broke Rooth's single-season RBI record with his 59th. Quintana joined Rooth as the only members of Felician's 200-hit club during Game 2 on Thursday against Bloomfield. In Game 1, senior OF Ray Rose joined Quintana and senior OF Kenny Vanderhee as active members of the school's 150-hit club. Rooth is the career hit leader with 210.
Freshman P Kevin Ernst picked up his first career victory on Thursday, tossing six shutout innings in Game 2 vs. Bloomfield. The Golden Falcon pitching staff strung together 27 consecutive innings without a walk on Thursday and Saturday. Junior P Nick Riker threw Felician's first complete game of the season in Game 1 vs. Philadelphia Sciences on Saturday. Freshman IF Richard Melendez went 7 for 9 in the twinbill, and sophomore C Jordan Noval was 5 for 5 with a double, homer, and six RBI in Game 2. In Game 2, the Golden Falcons used a season-high 21 players. Sophomore P Anthony Spina and freshman P Jeff Calabrese each broke Spina's school record for appearances with their 22nd. Spina also played two innings at second base and had a two-run double.
Post - Post won three games last week, including two against Dominican and Wilmington on Friday afternoon. The Eagles beat three of the teams in this weekend's CACC Tournament, beating Caldwell 10-5, Wilmington 12-6, and Dominican 11-10. Sophomore Jim Conto led the Eagles last week batting .615 (8-13) with six runs batted in. Senior Ryan Depolo batted .563 with a .563 on base percentage.
