NEW HAVEN, CT - Zach Mentzer of Philadelphia University has earned Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Player of the Week accolades for the week ending Sunday, April 22. Billy Gleason of Nyack College has been chosen Pitcher of the Week and Caldwell College pitcher Robert Casal has earned Rookie of the Week honors.
Mentzer, a junior shortstop from Gettysburg, PA, hit .714 in a rain-shortened week for the Rams. He led Philadelphia to a sweep of Dominican on Saturday by batting .714 with one home run, six RBI and two runs scored. He drove in a career-high five runs with a triple and a home run in the opener before going 3-for-4 with a run, RBI and stolen base in game 2.
Gleason, a 6-4 senior right-hander from Hollywood, FL, picked up two wins last week, one as a starter and one in relief. He threw a 9-inning shutout against Post on Wednesday and then closed an extra-inning win over Bloomfield on Saturday by working the final three innings in a 9-7 win.
Casal, a 5-11 freshman righty from Howard Beach, NY, earned a complete game victory over Wilmington Saturday afternoon. He went 9.0 innings and allowed only five hits and one run while fanning 12 batters. The Cougars won the game, 2-1.
Honorable Mention
Jason Rust, Wilmington - Hit .529 with two home runs, five RBI and five runs scored for the week.
Kyle Noon, Philadelphia - Earned a victory over Dominican by hurling 8.2 innings and allowing six hits and two runs while fanning nine.
CACC Notes
Caldwell - The Cougars were ranked second in the first Northeast Region Poll released by the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee on Apr. 19. They also moved up to seventh in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Northeast Region Poll. As of Apr. 15, the Cougars led the nation in runs per game (9.6), were second in doubles per game (2.67) and eighth in home runs per game (1.29). Freshman Adric Saxon also ranked first nationally in runs batted in per game (1.67) and was tied for third with fellow freshman Omar Velazquez in runs per game (1.43). Through 25 games, Caldwell has hit 33 home runs this season.
Felician - Felician has played five games this season against teams currently ranked in the Collegiate Baseball national Top 30, and eight games against the eight teams comprising the first D-II Baseball Committee Northeast Regional Ranking. After a two-game week, the Golden Falcons are scheduled to play seven times in the week ahead.
Philadelphia - Senior first baseman Keith Heck registered his 200th career hit against Dominican, becoming just the sixth player in Rams' history to reach the milestone. For his career, the Camden Catholic (N.J.) High product ranks second all-time in school history with 22 homeruns while his 130 RBI and 38 doubles rank fourth a seventh, respectively.
USP - With four hits this week, Justin DeVincenzo moves into third place on the Devils' all-time hit list with 125 for his career. He trails only Ken Bevenour (138 from 1983-87) and Vincent Madeline (139 from 2000-03). USP's win against Post snaps a 10-game losing streak.
