BLOOMFIELD AND FELICIAN EARN WINS IN CACC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

May 11, 2006

NEW CASTLE, DE ? Bloomfield College and Felician College earned victories today in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament with upsets over the top two seeds, Dominican College and Wilmington College. Bloomfield, the #3 seed, defeated #2 Wilmington, 6-4, while #4 Felician won a wild battle with top-seeded Dominican, 11-9.

The Chargers and Wildcats will meet tomorrow in an elimination game at noon at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, while the Golden Falcons and Deacons will play at approximately 3:00 pm. The winner of the Dominican/Wilmington contest and the loser of the second game will meet in another elimination game at approximately 6:00 pm. All three games will be broadcast live on the web.

Dominican and Felician took part in a slug-fest, as the two squads combined to pound out 28 hits. Felician roared out to an 8-0 lead after the top half of the fifth inning, but the Chargers found their offense thereafter. Junior 1B Frank Quintana led the way for Felician by smashing two, two-run home runs in the first and fifth innings. Quintana finished the day 2-for-5 with two runs and four RBI.

Dominican (36-16) finally found their bats and tallied two runs in the fifth, four in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to close to within one, 10-9.

Felician (28-23) tallied an insurance run in the top of the ninth when left-fielder Vincent DiBenedetti singled up the middle, plating right-fielder Ray Rose. The Chargers threatened in the ninth as two runners reached base via a walk and a Felician error, but right-hander Kevin Barrett was able to close things out to earn the save.

Dave Schoer went 4-for-4 with two RBI to help lead Felician, while DiBenedetti finished 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI. CACC Rookie of the Year Jose Made led the Chargers by going 3-for-5 with three RBI, while 2B Keith Gebert went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.

In the first game of the day, Bloomfield freshman left-hander Joe O'Donnell had a solid outing in his first collegiate postseason appearance, as he went 8.1 innings and allowed nine hits and four runs to improve to 7-4 this season. CACC Player of the Year Lino Mariot led the Deacon offense by going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Senior DH Webster Zackery went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while freshman 1B Kevin Lauranzon finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Bloomfield (26-25) jumped on top early by scoring single runs in the first and third innings, along with two runs in the second. Mariot did all the work himself in scoring the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. The senior shortstop reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, then stole third and scored after a throwing error by the Wildcat catcher.

Wilmington (30-20) threatened in the ninth when sophomore shortstop Steve Spiese led off with a home run and sophomore left fielder Joe Roth singled with one out later in the inning. Junior righty John Anderson entered the game for Bloomfield and surrendered a single to the first batter he faced, allowing the go-ahead run to come to the plate with one out. However, Anderson fanned the final two batters to earn the save.
