May 18, 2006

RINDGE, NH - Fifth-seeded Dominican College posted two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 lead and held on to defeat second-seeded New Haven in game two of the 2006 NCAA Division II Northeast Regional at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field this afternoon.

Dominican College (40-17) awaits the winner of today's third game between third-seeded UMass Lowell (36-12) and fourth-seeded Southern Connecticut State University (33-17), for a game tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. New Haven (35-11) will face Dowling College (30-14) tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m.

Freshman Jose Made (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) led the Dominican offense, going 3-for-4 with a home run, one run scored and three RBI, while sophomore Sean Brown (Massapequa, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Junior Keith Gebert (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) and classmate Jose Escalera (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Raymond's) each chipped in with one hit and one run scored.

Dominican starter, junior Joseph Catanese (Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) tossed a complete game, seven-hitter, to improve to 7-2 on the season. The right-hander allowed three runs, two earned, while striking out six batters and walking five.

University of New Haven was paced by freshman right fielder Ken Appel (Orange, Conn.) who hit 2-for-4, with two RBI. Junior left fielder Mike Reeder (Export, Pa.) chipped in with his ninth home run of the season while classmate Chris Flynn (Milford, Conn.) went 1-for-3 with two walks and one run scored.

New Haven starter, senior Ed Sempey (Clinton, Conn.) suffered the loss, yielding four runs, three earned on seven hits while striking out seven over six innings. Junior Dan Gulino (Alexandria, Va.) tossed three innings of solid relief, allowing only four hits and striking out two.

New Haven opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Flynn drew a lead-off walk and later scored on an Appel groundout. The Chargers added another run in the bottom of the third inning as Appel singled home sophomore Michael Moras (Orange, Conn.).

Dominican cut the New Haven lead to 2-1 in the top half of the fifth inning as Made connected for a two-out single driving home senior Mike Zani (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen). New Haven countered in the bottom half of the inning as Reeder delivered a two-out homerun to right-center.

After posting a run in the sixth frame to cut the New Haven lead to 3-2, Dominican rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to take its first lead of the day. After a Gebert double down the right-field line, Made belted a two-run homerun to center-field giving Dominican a 4-3 advantage.
