DOMINICAN NIPS UMASS-LOWELL, 8-7, IN NCAA BASEBALL ACTION

RINDGE, NH - Fifth-seeded Dominican College rallied for one run in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn a 8-7 victory over third-seeded UMass Lowell in game six of the 2006 NCAA Division II Northeast Regional at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field this afternoon.

Dominican (42-16) awaits its next opponent pending the final results of this afternoon's match ups. Fourth-seeded Southern Connecticut (34-18) will face sixth-seeded Dowling College (31-14) at 1 p.m, while UMass Lowell returns to action at 4:30 p.m. to take on top-seeded host, Franklin Pierce (41-11).

Junior Tom Keegan (Dickson City, Pa./Lackawanna CC) led Dominican offensively, going 2-for-3 with two home runs, a walk, two runs scored, and three RBI. Senior Eliezer Nunez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored to aid the Charger offense, while junior Peter Gilardo (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) posted two doubles, one run scored and two RBI.

Dominican reliever, freshman Nick Schreiber (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) earned his fifth victory of the season, tossing two scoreless innings, while allowing only one hit and walking one. Junior starter Matt Dilgen (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) tossed seven innings for the Chargers earning a no-decision. The right-hander allowed seven runs, five earned, on 12 hits, while striking out four and walking five.

UMass Lowell was paced by senior Tim Dempsey (Lexington, Mass./University of Connecticut) who went 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI. Junior Steve Paddock (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) and freshman Brendan Fullerton (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) both turned in solid efforts despite the loss, posting three hits apiece. Paddock connected for his sixth home run of the season and scored two runs, while Fullteron posted one run scored and swiped his fourth stolen base of the season.

UMass Lowell reliever, junior Pat Donovan (Lowell, Mass./UMass Boston) suffered the loss for the River Hawks, yielding three earned runs on four hits in two innings pitched. The loss squandered a solid start from junior Pete Nickerson (Dracut, Mass./Dracut) who hurled 6.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on ten hits, while striking out two and walking one.

UMass Lowell opened the scoring in the top half of the third inning as junior Sean Patno (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Three batters later, Dempsey connected for an RBI single up the middle to give the River Hawks the early advantage.

Dominican took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, notching two runs on five hits. UMass Lowell quickly countered with two runs in the top half of the fifth inning to take the lead as Paddock and Dempsey fueled the River Hawks with back-to-back home runs.

Dominican knotted the score in the bottom of the sixth inning off a Keegan home run to dead center-field, but UMass Lowell responded with a three-run seventh inning to take a 6-3 advantage. In the bottom half of the frame, the Chargers regained the lead, posting a four-run rally that was capped by Keegan's second home run of the game.

UMass Lowell immediately answered in the top of the eighth inning as sophomore Tim Manton (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) scored off junior Patrick Wilson's (Dracut, Mass./Bishop Guertin) RBI double. The River Hawks threatened with runners on first and third and no outs, but Schreiber ended the rally, collecting the final three outs of the inning.

After retiring the River Hawks in the top of the ninth, the Chargers clinched their second victory of the tournament with a one-out rally in the bottom of the frame. The rally was sparked by a lead-off single from Nunez and Gilardo's game-winning double.
