WATERBURY - The Post University athletic department announced today that Andrew McNamara has been named head coach of the Post University baseball program.
"I'm extremely excited to be here at Post University," McNamara said. "This program has the tools to be one of the most prestigious Division II programs in the northeast. And with time and patience I hope to bring this program to that level."
McNamara comes to Post from Mount Saint Vincent College, where he spent two seasons as the head coach of the baseball team. In addition, he also served as an assistant athletic director, and an assistant director in the admissions office.
Nicknamed "AJ," in the first season of the program, he led the Dolphins to a 15-20 overall record and an 11-11 mark in the wood-bat Skyline Conference. As a result, he finished second in the balloting for the 2005 Skyline Coach of the Year.
During his tenure at the Riverdale, N.Y. campus, his players succeeded both on and off the diamond. His pitching staff finished third in earned run average, and the team finished fourth in the conference in fielding percentage. Five players were nominated for awards, including Rookie of the Year and Pitcher of the Year.
Seven student-athletes garnered spots on the Dean's List, and the baseball program maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 for three straight semesters.
Prior to taking the reigns of the Dolphins program, McNamara was an assistant baseball coach at Wabash College from 2001-02. He worked with the pitching staff and the team's defense. Three of his players were selected to the All-Conference squad, and one earned All-Region honors.
From 1999 to 2001, McNamara was an assistant at Western Connecticut State University. He was responsible for the team's defense, pitching and game-day operations. One of his pitchers earned All-Conference and All-Region kudos.
He holds a bachelor's degree in communications and marketing from Virginia Wesleyan College, and a master's degree in organizational leadership from Mercy College.
The first meeting of the season for serious minded players will be Sept. 9, 2006 at 6 p.m. Please contact McNamara in the baseball office at (203) 596-4690.
