NEW CASTLE, Del. – No.1 seed New Jersey Insitute of Technology and No. 2 seed Dominican (N.Y.) College advanced to the championship round of the 2005 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Baseball Tournament following Day 2 action on Friday at Wilson Field.

GAME 3: NJIT 14, CALDWELL 1:  In losers’ bracket action, Phil Resciniti (East Hanover, NJ) and Kwesi Mitchell (Piscataway, NJ) hit first-inning homeruns as NJIT eliminated defending champion Caldwell College, 14-1.
NJIT took a 5-0 lead after two innings off of Caldwell starter Mike Kolesar (New City, NY) (4-5), then put its first seven runners on base in the fourth inning en route to scoring seven times. Dan Lupo (West Milford, NJ) went 4 for 6 for the Highlanders, including a two-run triple in the fourth. Mitchell finished 3 for 6 in NJIT’s 16-hit attack, and Austin DeRogatis (Toms River, NJ) was 2 for 4 with three runs batted in.

NJIT hurler Chris Legiadre (Manalapan, NJ) (7-2) pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks, and did not allow an earned run. Hasani Whitfield (Jamaica, NY) had an RBI single for No. 3 seed Caldwell (22-20).

GAME 4: DOMINICAN (NY) 6, WILMINGTON (DE) 1: Dominican sophomore pitcher Matt Dilgen (Staten Island, NY) tossed a five-hitter in the winners’ bracket final, sending the Chargers to the title game.
No. 4 seed and tournament host Wilmington (Del.) College took an early lead when Rich Ware (Salem, NJ) led off the first inning with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. But the Chargers took advantage of Wildcat miscues to score unearned runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings to back Dilgen (3-2), who struck out five and walked one.

Pete Gilardo (Cornwall, NY) went 3 for 4 and scored twice for Dominican (24-19), which also received two hits each from Keith Gebert (Brooklyn, NY) and Chad Duesler (Northville, NY) (2 RBI). Wilmington starter Pete Henyan (Cornwall, NY) (6-2) struck out 11 batters in a complete game effort, allowing nine hits and three earned runs. Garry Wright (Newark, DE) was 2 for 4 for the Wildcats.

GAME 3: NJIT 6, WILMINGTON 3: Trailing 3-1 heading into the ninth inning, NJIT (22-17) rallied for five two-out runs in the losers’ bracket final. The Highlanders were down to their final strike on two occasions.

With two outs and runners on first and second, NJIT’s Dan Morogiello (Whitehouse Station, NJ) singled home pinch-runner Robert Forbes (West Caldwell, NJ) on an 0-and-2 pitch by Wilmington reliever Steve Spiese (Newark, DE) (0-1). Matthew Schlitter (Harbeson, DE) followed by working the count full before singling to right field to score Justin Racz (Parsippany, NJ) with the tying run. Phil Resciniti (East Hanover, NJ) put the Highlanders ahead with a single, plating Morogiello, and two batters later, Kwesi Mitchell (Piscataway, NJ) singled home two runs to cap the rally. Cory Kuzmik (Teaneck, NJ) worked a perfect bottom of the ninth for his third save.

Wilmington had taken a 2-1 lead in the seventh on Derek Pugh’s (New Castle, DE) RBI single, and tacked on an unearned run in the eighth. Wildcat starter Joe Matterer (Newark, DE) allowed one run on five hits over eight innings.

NJIT’s Zach Porcello (Chester, NJ) (3-6) earned the win, lasting 152 pitches over eight innings. Porcello allowed four hits, struck out a career-high 12 batters, and walked eight. Morogiello and Resciniti had two hits apiece.
