Left-Hander From New Milford Inks Letter Of Intent

P.J. Saporito

NEWARK, N.J. ? P.J. Saporito of New Milford, a 2004 first-team all-state all groups selection out of New Milford High, has signed a national letter of intent to continue his baseball career at New Jersey Institute of Technology, NJIT head coach Brian Callahan announced today.

Saporito, a left-handed pitcher and first-baseman, was 12-0 with seven shutouts as a junior last season, setting a school record for single-season victories. In 79 1/3 innings, he struck out 97 batters while walking 17. He won four games in the state tournament, leading the Knights to a 25-3 record and the Group I state championship. He also hit .392 with four homeruns and 37 runs batted in. He was named the Bergen Record Player of the Year.

Saporito has a career pitching record of 28-2 through games of April 26. He was a Group I all-state selection as a freshman and sophomore, and was named Star Ledger Freshman of the Year in 2002. A National Honor Society member, he ranks fourth in a class of 128 and has a grade-point average of 4.49 on a 4.0 scale.

?We are extremely excited to sign P.J.,? said Callahan, in his fifth season. ?Our assistant coach, Ed Ward, did a great job in recruiting a player of P.J.?s caliber. He can make an immediate impact both on the mound and at the plate. We look forward to P.J. having a great four years with us, both on the field and in the classroom.

New Jersey Institute of Technology, the state?s public research university, enrolls more than 8,200 students in bachelor?s, master?s and doctoral degrees in 100 degree programs. NJIT is renowned for expertise in architecture, applied mathematics, wireless communications and networking, solar physics, advanced engineered particulate materials, nanotechnology, neural engineering and eLearning. The Highlanders? athletics department sponsors 14 NCAA Division-II varsity sports, seven for men and seven for women, plus Division I men?s soccer.
