Kuzmik Earns First Victory In Nightcap

NEWARK, N.J. ? Freshman pitcher Cory Kuzmik (Teaneck, NJ/Ramapo) earned his first collegiate victory as the New Jersey Institute of Technology baseball team salvaged a split of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with a 4-2 Game 2 victory over visiting Wilmington (Del.) College on Saturday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Wilmington won Game 1, 3-1.

Kuzmik, a left-hander making his first career start, tossed a complete-game three hitter, at one point retiring 14 consecutive batters. He allowed one earned run, struck out 11 batters and walked none. He completed the game by escaping a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the seventh.

Kwesi Mitchell (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) stole three bases and scored twice for the Highlanders (14-11, 12-3), the first-place team in the CACC and the No. 7-ranked squad in the most recent Division II Northeast regional writers poll. Mattthew Schlitter (Harbeson, DE/Sussex Central) had a run-scoring single and Justin Racz (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) was 1 for 1 plus a walk and sacrifice fly. Dan Lupo (New Milford, NJ/New Milford) capped NJIT?s scoring with a fifth-inning solo homerun.

Wilmington starter Scott Reynolds (Newark, DE/Christiana) (0-2) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on only one hit in 3 1/3 innings. Bryan Fitzgerald (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark?s) had a RBI groundout.

In the opener, the Wildcats? Joe Matterer (Newark, DE/Newark) tossed a two-hitter, allowing only one unearned run. Matterer (3-3) struck out three and walked none, and faced just two batters over the minimum. Steve Spiese (Newark, DE/Newark) and Garry Wright (Newark, DE/St. Mark?s) had run-scoring singles in the second inning. Jeff Potter (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) doubled and scored for NJIT.
