Philadelphia, Pa. - Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
(CACC) Commissioner Daniel Mara
presented the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia the
2008-09 CACC Men's Sportsmanship Award in a ceremony between games
of last Saturday's basketball doubleheader against Dominican
College. In addition, Mara also presented the 2009 CACC Team
Sportsmanship award to the men's cross country program.
USP President, Dr. Philip Gerbino, along with representatives of the men's baseball, basketball, cross country and tennis teams were at center court to receive the Men's Sportsmanship Award from Commissioner Mara while Dr. Gerbino, eight members of the men's cross country team and head coach Bob Heller were presented the men's cross country sportsmanship award.
The CACC Men's Sportsmanship Award was first handed out after the 2006-07 season. Each CACC sport hands out a sportsmanship award at the conclusion of its respective season and institutions receive points for each vote it receives throughout the year. The point total for each school is then divided by the number of sports the institution sponsors to determine the overall sportsmanship award winner. One men's program and one women's program receives a plaque each year. Nyack College was presented the women's plaque in the fall.
In 2008-2009, the USP men's athletic program collected team sportsmanship awards in baseball and basketball en route to 17.0 points. Nyack was second with 13.8 points after winning the sportsmanship award in men's soccer. Felician College was third with 11.6 points and won the golf award, while Goldey-Beacom College was fourth with 8.25 points. Post University took home the award for tennis, while Bloomfield College won the honor in cross country.
Heller's men's cross country squad earned the 2009 CACC Team
Sportsmanship Award in
voting conducted by the conference's 11 coaches. This year
marks the third time in the past four seasons that the men's cross
country program has earned the award. The men's and women's cross
country programs at USP have won a total of six sportsmanship
awards since the program's inception in 2000.
