WILMINGTON NAMES SIMMONS AND SHERROD ATHLETES OF THE MONTH

January 3, 2008

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Wilmington University is pleased to announce that basketball standouts Amelia Simmons (Concord HS/Wilmington, DE) and Antonio Sherrod (Glen Burnie HS/Baltimore, MD) have been named Wildcat Athletes of the Month for November and December.

Amelia Simmons, a sophomore forward/guard on the women's basketball team, has started the 2007-2008 season right where she left of last year, as one of the top players in the conference. Last year's CACC Rookie of the Year has not disappointed in her sophomore campaign, as she averaged 19.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game, both team highs. She is also leading the CACC in these categories, and for her efforts has been named CACC Player of the Week once, and received honorable mention honors four other times. Her best effort came in a 76-58 win over Lock Haven, where she scored 21 points and pulled down 19 rebounds. A captain, Amelia has helped the Wildcats to a 2-1 record in the CACC and an overall record of 6-4.

Antonio Sherrod, a sophomore forward on the men's basketball team, has helped the Wildcats off to their best start in over five years. Sherrod is second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.7 points per game, while leading the team in rebounding, pulling down 7.5 boards per game. His 18 steals also lead the team, and he ranks in the top 15 in the conference in scoring, and in the top-10 in rebounding and steals. He has produced three double-double efforts in the first two months, including a 22-point, 13-rebound performance in a 70-59 win over Felician and a 25-point, 11-rebound showing in a 79-75 victory over Glenville State. Sherrod, a captain, has helped the ?Cats to a 1-1 record in the CACC and an overall record of 4-6.
