Golf: The Goldey-Beacom College golf team finished in third place in its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance last Wednesday afternoon at the Pine Barrows Golf Club in Jackson, NJ.

The Lightning finished with a three-day combined score of 956 (+92), shooting a 314 on day one and 321 on day two and three, which placed them behind only Bryant University at 910 (+46) and St. Thomas Aquinas at 923 (+59). Post University finished in fourth place at 960 (+96), followed by Le Moyne College and Pace University in a tie for fifth place at 968 (+104), New Haven in seventh place at 973 (+109) and Dowling College in eighth place at 980 (+116).

Lightning junior Mike Tobiason (Wilmington, DE) finished in a tie for sixth place at +16 (232), shooting a 76 on day one and two and an 80 in the final round. Sophomore Steven Cutler (Kennett Square, PA) was next, finishing in a tie for 13th place at +18 (234), shooting a 79 on the first two days before posting a 76 on day three.

Junior Nick Nardo (Newark, DE) finished in a tie for 27th place at +31 (247), posting an 82 on days one and two and an 83 on day three. Senior Michael Clair (Landenberg, PA) ended his golf career at GBC in a tie for 29th place at +32 (248), shooting a 79 in round one, an 84 in round two and an 85 in round three. Freshman Mark Agnew (Newark, DE), meanwhile, finished in a tie for 32nd place at +34 (250), shooting an 80 in round one, an 88 in round two and an 82 in round three.

Softball: The Goldey-Beacom College softball team went 3-2 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tournament last week, defeating Post University, Wilmington College and Felician College and losing twice to eventual champion Caldwell College.

Freshman Megan Harper (Acto, NJ) and senior Holly Kimble (Millsboro, DE) both scored unearned runs to help defeat Post University in the tournament opener before freshman Kendra Russell (New Castle, DE) ? who picked up the win against the Eagles ? allowed seven runs in 3.0 IP in the first loss to Caldwell later that afternoon.

Against Wilmington, Russell, Kimble and senior Tiffany Frick (Pennsauken, NJ) each drove in two runs to down the Wildcats while Harper had two RBI against Felician. Russell picked up the win in each contest to improve to 18-8 on the season.

With both teams facing elimination, Goldey-Beacom and Caldwell produced a classic that ended when Anna Dahl led off the bottom of the 12th inning with a walk-off home run. Russell tossed 11 innings for the Lightning, scattering eight hits and allowing two runs while striking out four. She also drove in the lone Lightning run with an RBI single to score senior Devon O?Brien (Wilmington, DE) in the top of the eighth inning.

The Lightning finished the 2005 season 27-18 with a 12-8 mark in conference play.
