Cross Country (Women) ? The Goldey-Beacom College women?s cross country team took 12th place at the Belmont Classic Saturday morning at Fairmont Park. Freshman Katie Lewis (Newark, DE), a CACC Honor Selection last week, led the Lightning women with a time of 22:43.85, placing her 27th overall. She was followed by classmate Jess Kaszeta (Wilmington, DE) in 37th place with a time of 23:11.26, junior Brandy Ash (Dagsboro, DE) in 80th with a time of 25:23.63, junior Lu Lu Maseko (Swaziland) in 104th place at 28:38.18 and senior Nonhlanhla Maseko (Swaziland) in 105th at 28:40.37.
Cross Country (Men) ? The Goldey-Beacom College men?s cross country team captured sixth place at the Belmont Classic Saturday morning at Fairmont Park. The Lightning men finished with a total of 142 points. Sophomore Matt Lang (Chestertown, MD) posted the best time amongst Goldey-Beacom men, finished the race with a time of 29:14.23 which was good for a 12th place finish. Junior Brad Paski (Wilmington, DE) was next for the Lightning in 15th place at 29:33.12, followed by junior Chip Lewis (Newark, DE) in 36th place at 31:17.53, freshman Rashad Matthews (Milford, DE) in 39th place with a time of 31:24.34, sophomore Brian Kirk (Wilmington, DE) in 55th place at 32:56.78, and sophomore Matt Werkmeister (Newark, DE) in 94th place with a time of 37:41.35.
Golf: The Goldey-Beacom College golf team finished in ninth place this past weekend at the 2004 ECAC Division II Men?s Golf Championship, hosted by Le Moyne College at the 6,213 yard, par 71 Drumlins East Course. The Lightning finished with a team score 630, posting a 320 in round one on Saturday before cutting their score by 10 strokes to 310 on the second and final day of competition. Junior Mike Tobiason (Wilmington, DE) was the top finisher for the Lightning, shooting a 79 in round one and a 75 in round two for a combined score of 154. Senior Michael Clair (Landenberg, PA) finished in a tie for 29th place with a score of 156. He shot a 79 in round one and a 77 in round two. Sophomore Steve Cutler (Kennett Square, PA) was next for Goldey-Beacom in a tie for 43rd place as he shot a 79 in both rounds to finish at 158. Junior Nick Nardo (Newark, DE) finished in a tie for 59th place with a final score of 162, shooting an 83 in round one and a 79 in round two. Sophomore Dave Pfotzer (Newark, DE) rounded out the lineup for the Lightning, finished in a tie for 87th place at 171, shooting an 87 in round one and an 84 in round two.
Women?s soccer ? The Goldey-Beacom College women?s soccer team split a pair of games last week, blanking New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) 3-0 Wednesday afternoon at Nancy Churchman Sawin Athletic Field before falling to Caldwell College in overtime on Saturday, 2-1. Junior Lori Knabb (Paulsboro, NJ) and sophomore April Yanacek (Wilmington, DE) scored against NJIT as the Lightning won for the second time in their last three outings. On Saturday, Yanacek?s fifth goal of the season gave Goldey-Beacom an early 1-0 lead before the Cougars tied the score with under 13 minutes remaining and won the contest 5:38 into overtime on a goal by Victoria Aguilera.
Men?s Soccer: The Goldey-Beacom College men?s soccer team dropped a pair of matches last week before settling for a 3-3 tie with Caldwell College on Saturday afternoon. The Lightning began the week with a 6-1 loss at Shippensburg College in a game played throughout a torrential downpour of rain. Goldey-Beacom rebounded with a solid effort against West Chester at Nancy Churchman Sawin Athletic Field on Wednesday but again found themselves on the losing end of the score, falling 3-0 to the Rams. This past Saturday, the Lightning jumped out to an early 3-1 lead on Caldwell before the Cougars stormed back for two goals in the final 10 minutes to tie the score at three. Senior Matt DiGiacobbe (Newark, DE) scored three goals last week while junior Bruno Farias (Recife, Brazil) scored twice to tie DiGiacobbe for the team lead with six goals.
Volleyball ? The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team posted a perfect 4-0 mark last week to improve to 8-6 on the season and 7-3 in conference play. They Lightning began the week with a 3-0 win over Bloomfield College, followed by a 3-0 win over Nyack College at MBNA American Hall on Thursday night. The team then traveled to Felician College in New Jersey for a tri-match Saturday afternoon and came away with wins over Felician (3-0) and Georgian Court (3-1) to run their winning streak to five games. Overall, the Lightning have won seven of their last eight matches. Junior Norah Burdette (Ellicott City, MD) led the way for the Lightning, posting 44 total kills and a solid .298 hitting percentage for the week. Junior Clare Phillips (Wilmington, DE), meanwhile, posted a season-high 16 kills (.424 hitting pct.) in the win over Nyack while freshman Adrienne Melvin (Newark, DE) posted her first-career triple double with 10 kills, 10 assists and 11 digs against Georgian Court.
