Welcome to another edition of The Tiger Round Up ? your source for everything athletics here at Holy Family University. Our women?s soccer team is ready to surge into the playoffs and our Men?s Cross Country team is gearing up for their regional championships. Keep reading for more information and as always: Enjoy!
Men?s Soccer
Our men?s soccer team was knocked out of playoff contention after suffering a tough 3-0 loss to Caldwell College. The team then went on to finish their season by dropping a game to Millersville 6 goals to 1 the very next day. They finished their season with a record of 3-14-1 overall. On a positive note, freshman Jim Latronica was named second team all conference after finishing the season with a team high 9 goals and 1 assist.
Women?s Soccer
Currently our women?s soccer team stands at the top of the conference with a record of 9-1. Their overall record is 11-7 and they have earned a first round bye in the playoffs. On Thursday 11/4, they face Dominican College and if they can pull out a win, they will move on to the finals on Saturday. The women?s soccer team is proud to announce that four of their players have made the 2004 All-CACC team. First team all conference includes Melissa Gamble and Brianne Redelheim and second team includes Gabrielle Donnelly and Colleen Gregory. We wish the girls all the luck against Dominican!
Volleyball
Our women?s volleyball team went 1-1 last week, dropping a game to Dominican College on 10/26 by a score of 1-3 and winning a home game against Nyack by a score of 3-1. The team holds a conference record of 7 wins and 11 losses and an overall record of 8 wins and 19 losses. Teresa Devine made the CACC Honor Roll by matching her own school record with 23 kills in the matches against Dominican and Nyack. She added 10 fantastic digs and six aces in their win over Nyack. Holy Family controls their own destiny with two conference games this week. If they win both, they win advance to the playoffs for the first time. If they lose one, they will need some help from NJIT with a win over Dominican.
Tennis
The women?s tennis team played their final game of the season on October 27th against Gwynedd-Mercy College. They played hard but unfortunately the ball did not bounce the way they wished it would; losing the away game by a final score of 9-0. The team finishes their season with a record of 7 wins and 10 losses. Thanks to Albert Stroble and all of the team members for a great season!
Cross Country
The men?s cross country team has been practicing hard under the strict guidance of Coach McKeever these past two weeks; getting ready to run their 6.2 mile race at Indiana University of PA this Saturday. The men will be departing on Friday morning in order to fully prepare for their NCAA Regional race. We wish them the best!
Player of the Week
Teresa Devine was named to the CACC player of the week honor roll last week. Teresa recorded a career mark of 23 kills in each contest last week, en route to leading Holy Family on their playoff march. Teresa, an alumnus of Archbishop Ryan High School, is in her first year of graduate studies. Teresa graduated from Holy Family magna cum laude with a bachelor?s degree specializing in Management & Marketing. Teresa is now enrolled in Holy Family?s Counseling program, in hopes that she will enter the guidance field.
Getting to Know?
John Amorim
In addition to introducing you to Head Men?s Soccer John Amorim in this week?s edition of ?Getting to Know?? we are also bidding Coach Amorim a graceful farewell, as he has announced his resignation effective immediately. During his time here Amorim has instilled in all of his players and peers, a sense of professionalism and dignity. His first wish was to thank the school?s administrators, in particular the Athletic Director Sandra Michael, for allowing him the opportunity to spend the past five seasons as a Tiger. His sincere gratitude can be felt when speaking with him about leaving the players and program that he has built with his vision and dedication to winning and excellence. Amorim who is also a teacher at nearby Archbishop Ryan High School is resigning due to overwhelming occupational and family obligations.
Coach Amorim is a single parent. He lives with his two sons, Timothy and Andrew. He believes that structure and discipline are the keys to both life and the game of soccer, and has always portrayed prime examples for his players both on and off the field. Prior to joining Holy Family Amorim was a two-time All-American goalkeeper at NCAA Division III Lynchburg College, and was also the head coach at Conwell-Egan High School. In addition to his involvement at the high school and collegiate levels, Amorim is a long time member of the USSF Region 1 coaching staff, and a well known youth volunteer/coach.
Amorim who departs on a sour note after his worst season at Holy Family, is certain that the parts which he and the assistant coaches have already put in place, and the influence of next year?s coach will match the components of a winning team. ?I wish the new coach and all of my players present and past all of the best,? Coach Amorim added, ?And would like extend my gratitude to Sandy Michaels and everyone at Holy Family for making my stay there a pleasant and successful one.? Coach Amorim will continue to teach at Archbishop Ryan next year, but is uncertain of whether or not he will be coaching elsewhere come the 2005 season.
That concludes this week?s edition of The Tiger Round Up ? thanks for reading and make sure you tune in next week to get your daily sports fix!
