Goldey-Beacom Weekly Report - The Lightning Bolt

Cross Country (Women) ? The Goldey-Beacom College women captured 11th place at the 2004 Goldey-Beacom Fall Invitational with a score of 255 points. Overall, the West Chester College Rams totaled 61 points to take first place, followed by Georgian Court College with 82 points and Nyack College with 125 points. Freshman Katie Lewis (Newark, DE) was the top finisher in the women?s 5K for the Lightning, finishing in 21st place with a time of 22:28.15. Fellow freshman Jessica Kaszeta (Wilmington, DE) was next in 41st place at 23:34.97, followed by junior Brandy Ash (Dagsboro, DE) in 66th with a time of 26:13.46, junior Lu Lu Maseko (Swaziland) in 74th at 28:12.35 and senior Nonhlanhla Maseko (Swaziland) in 76th place at 28:48.76.

Cross Country (Men) ? The Goldey-Beacom College men captured fifth place at the Goldey-Beacom Fall Invitational with a score of 152 points. Overall, the West Chester men?s team totaled 52 points, which was 16 better than second place Nyack at 68 and 19 better than third place Albright at 71. For the Lightning, sophomore Matt Lang (Chestertown, MD) was the top finisher in 10th place with a time of 29:13.85. He was followed in 11th place by junior Brad Paski (Wilmington, DE) with a time of 29:15.20, sophomore Mickey Jones (Newark, DE) in 39th place at 31:47.01, junior Adin ?Chip? Lewis (Newark, DE) in 44th at 32:00.08, freshman Rashad Matthews (Milford, DE) in 49th place at 32:31.23, sophomore Brian Kirk (Wilmington, DE) in 54th place at 33:05.62, freshman Alan Passwaters (Houston, DE) in 66th place at 35:52.42, and sophomore Matt Werkmeister (Newark, DE) in 73rd place at 37:04.37.

Golf: The Goldey-Beacom College golf team did not compete this past weekend. They Lightning will return to action Tuesday, October 12 when they take on Holy Family University. Later this week, the Lightning will host the first annual GBC Fall Invitational at Haterfeld National Golf Course. The University of Delaware and Albright College, amongst others, are schedule to compete.

Women?s soccer ? The Goldey-Beacom College women?s soccer team posted a 1-0-1 mark last week, defeating Felician College 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at Nancy Churchman Sawin Athletic Field before settling for a 0-0 tie at Dominican on Saturday afternoon. Trailing the Golden Falcons 1-0 in the second half on Wednesday, junior Lori Knabb (Paulsboro, NJ) converted her third penalty kick of the season to even the score at 1-1. Sophomore April Yanacek (Wilmington, DE) scored later in the second half to give the Lightning the 2-1 win. Overall, the Lightning are now 2-1-1 in their last four games following a stretch which saw them go 1-5-1 and stand at 4-6-2 (3-2-1 CACC) on the season. Overall, Knabb leads the team in scoring with 19 points (7 goals, five assists), followed by Yanacek with 16 points (7 goals, 2 assists).

Men?s Soccer: The Goldey-Beacom College men?s soccer team lost both of its matches last week to fall to 2-11-1 on the season. The week began with a hard-fought, 1-0 loss in double-overtime to CACC rival Felician College. The Lightning then took on Dominican College on Saturday afternoon and were shutout, 4-0. Senior Matt DiGiacobbe (Newark, DE) leads the team in scoring with 17 points (8 goals, 1 assist) while junior Bruno Farias (Recife, Brazil) is second with 15 points (7 goals, 1 assist).

Volleyball ? The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team posted a 3-1 record last week to improve to 11-7 on the season and 9-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play. Following a 3-2 loss at Philadelphia University on Tuesday night, the Lightning rebounded to down Bowie State, 3-0, on Thursday night. Freshman Adrienne Melvin (Newark, DE) led the team with eight kills and 11 kills. On Saturday, Goldey-Beacom swept a CACC tri-match at Teikyo Post, downing the Eagles 3-1 before blanking Georgian Court 3-0 in the nightcap. Freshman Kendra Russell (New Castle, DE) posted 28 total kills while Burdette had 23 kills on the day. Overall, the Lightning have won eight of their last nine matches and currently sit fourth in the NCAA (Division II) in aces/game at 3.23.
