FELICIAN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ACTIVE IN COMMUNITY

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician College women’s basketball team was active in several community service projects as it prepared for the current season.

Third-year head coach Steve Fagan set the example for his squad when he was a featured speaker at a coaching clinic for New York City’s Public Schools Athletic League. Fagan lectured on the topic “Developing Players by Position” at the Oct. 2 clinic at Van Arsdale High in Brooklyn.

The next day, team members worked at the 2010 Mayor’s Run/Walk to Break the Silence of Ovarian Cancer in West Orange. The Golden Falcons volunteered to manage the water stations along the race. The event raised more than $60,000 for the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition.
For the third consecutive year, Felician players and coaches donned costumes and volunteered as chaperones at the Rutherford Ragamuffin Parade on Oct. 23, helping the youth of Rutherford celebrate Halloween. One of Felician’s two campuses, including the dormitories and the athletics department, is housed in Rutherford.
In another annual event instituted by Fagan, the Golden Falcons sponsored a “Shoot For Hunger” food drive at their Nov. 22 home game against Washington Adventist University. The team collected non-perishable food items to be donated to St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark.
“It is extremely important for my staff and I to make sure that our players embrace a sense ofpurpose,” Fagan said. “It’s simply about being grateful for everything and every day God has given us.”
The team has at least two more special days planned in conjunction with its home schedule. The Golden Falcons will sponsor “Take a Kid to the Game” Day on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 8, against Philadelphia University, and will join with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association to support breast cancer research at Pink Zone Night on Feb. 15 versus Nyack College.
Felician, an NCAA Division II member, plays in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The Golden Falcons are off to a 6-1 start this season, including 2-0 in CACC play.
